18 March: Belgian photographer Wim Jan Jaak Hermans is today announced as the winner of the Belgium National Award, part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s leading photography competitions.
Open to photographers of all abilities, the National Award seeks to uncover and honour the single best image taken by a Belgian photographer entered into any of the ten Open categories of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards.
Wim Jan Jaak Hermans, who lives in Antwerp and has been a keen amateur photographer for 10 years, was chosen as the winner for a stunning shot titled “An Afternoon City Sun”. It was selected by a local panel of judges including Erik Derycke, Editor, Shoot Magazine.
The local judges also awarded runner up positions to:
- 2nd place - Phillip Moes
- 3rd place – Yves Devleminck
Talking about the winning image, Hermans comments: “The photo was taken on a summer afternoon in August 2013. My girlfriend was preparing a city trip and moved every fifteen minutes an inch with the sun. Because we live in the city and the garden is surrounded by high walls, we only can enjoy a few hours of sun a day.”
As the Belgium National Award winner, Hermans receives the latest Sony digital camera equipment and will be flown to London to attend the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony on 30 April. The winning photograph will also be exhibited at Somerset House, London from 1-18 May as part of the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition and published on www.worldphoto.org
The World Photography Organisation also announced today the winners of the Open and Youth categories of the Sony World Photography Awards plus the winners of the 37 other National Awards across the world. To see all the winning images please go to www.worldphoto.org
